We always look forward to our autumn family photo shoots here at Mackney Photography in Darley Abbey Mills, Derby. While it’s a shame that summer passes as quickly as it does, the change of seasons and the arrival of autumn is a time we relish each year.

Why? Well, aside from the fact that we love snuggle jumpers, pumpkin spice lattes and all things Halloween (anyone else?), we love introducing autumn colours into our shoots.

Autumnal colours – the burnt reds, oranges, yellows and browns – are always a delight. Locally, near our Darley Abbey Mills photography studio, there are many beautiful parks, woodlands and riverside pathways that burst with colour every autumn. We love heading to these with local families to make the most of it!

Even as the leaves fall later in the season there is still so much fun to be had outside. Children and dogs love running through piles of crisp fallen leaves and jumping in rain puddles, don’t they? We can capture some of this excitement during an outdoor session during autumn time – we know that those natural moments and expressions are a joy to look back on.

Indoor autumn photoshoots

As an alternative to our outdoor autumn photoshoots, we also offer indoor autumn sessions at our Derby photography studio. These are perfect for those autumnal days when the weather doesn’t quite play ball, but also if you wish for your portraits to have more of a fine art look.

You might also choose a studio shoot simply because you’d prefer a more controlled environment. Naturally, the studio is a more confined space. We find that is a big plus for parents of toddlers and younger children (and dogs) who may be prone to running off given half the chance! The more relaxed you are, the better your photos will be.

What to wear to your autumn family photo shoot  

We’re often asked what families should wear to their autumn family photoshoot. In answer to that, we’d advise that, when planning your autumn family photoshoot outfits, you choose colours that work well with those within the natural surroundings, particularly if you’re having an outdoor autumn shoot.

Autumn is associated with greens, yellows, reds, oranges and browns, so pick something that would work well with these, and aim for a cohesive look across the whole family. 

Children often wear wellies for autumn shoots. These look really good, especially when they can “jump through muddy puddles”! The great thing about a location photoshoot is that kids can be kids and, because of this, we're able to capture their natural behaviour and expressions.
