About the artwork

Thread of the land - Mam Tor, Derbyshire

Captured from the high peaks of Mam Tor in the heart of Derbyshire, this portrait is a powerful tribute to the beauty and quiet drama of our local landscape. Photographer Simon Mackney undertook a challenging climb to reach this vantage point—only to discover, breathless at the summit, that a far easier path existed. It's a reminder that perspective often comes from the journey itself.

The winding Snake Pass below flows like a ribbon through the rolling hills, subtly illuminated by the trails of moving vehicles at dusk. If you look closely, you’ll spot the understated nods to sport: a lone paraglider catching the breeze, a cyclist navigating the curves—each woven naturally into the scenery rather than dominating it.

Awarded Silver in the BIPP Monthly Awards, this piece speaks to endurance, discovery, and the striking serenity of Derbyshire’s Peak District.
