At last, Winter is a distant memory and our family location photoshoots in Darley Abbey Mills are once again available for booking!
We just love getting out of the studio, whether in the spring, summer or autumn and photographing you and your lovely family in the great outdoors.
Why book a family location photoshoot in Darley Abbey Mills?
As you’ll likely know, here in Darley Abbey Mills, we are truly spoilt!
With it being a UNESCO English Heritage site, there’s so much history and character in the local area and lots of lovely places to visit. Many of these make great outdoor locations for our family photoshoots.
So, if you’re considering a family photoshoot in Derby and love the idea of a relaxed outdoor portrait session while the weather is good, set against a natural backdrop, then our family location photoshoots are for you!
We’ll create fine art portraits and magnificent wall art that you’ll love to look back on both now and in the future.
What’s involved in an outdoor family photoshoot?
Our outdoor photoshoots are all about you and your family spending time together and having a laugh in a natural environment.
We want to capture genuine moments of family fun and your natural smiles and expressions, so we keep it casual and low-pressure.
We certainly won’t be asking you to smile for the camera or to pose together awkwardly. Instead, we'll simply photograph you naturally interacting with each other – just try to pretend we aren’t even there!
How many people can take part in an outdoor family photoshoot?
Whether you all want to be involved, or whether you just want to have portraits of your children, we will create special family portraits that capture your personalities and unique family dynamic.
There's no set limit to how many people come along, but most location shoots involve a single family. Just let us know in advance how many people are to be part of your family photoshoot so that we can tailor the session accordingly.
Many families book an outdoor family location photoshoot with us each year, while others book to commemorate a special occasion such as a rare extended family gathering or to coincide with a family celebration such as a wedding, anniversary or milestone birthday.
With that in mind, you can of course involve the wider family – cousins, aunties, grandparents etc – and your furry friends too if you wish. As family portrait photographers, we’re highly experienced in photographing family groups of all sizes and love to capture several generations of the family altogether.

Alternatively, we can suggest locations for your photoshoot in Darley Abbey based on our extensive experience of the area. We live locally so we have lots of ideas and an endless list of places to recommend.
- For example, we often shoot in the beautiful Darley Abbey Park. A relaxed walk around the park is an ideal opportunity for family photographs. It’s a great place to capture candid moments of your family enjoying a picnic, playing games, or simply spending time walking together in an outdoor setting.
- Thanks to Darley Abbey Mills' industrial heritage, the area also has an abundance of character. There are so many secret doorways, loads of footpaths and trails, and places that you can explore with the family while we capture natural, outdoor family portraits.

Do let us know in the comments section if you have any other suggestions that you feel we should add to this list!
- Darleys – a lovely fine dining restaurant located right on the river in Darley Abbey Mills.
This award-winning restaurant, in a 200-year-old former mill building, is in a beautiful waterfront location. The food is delicious too. Simon and I visit at often as we can. It’s family-friendly and we have always enjoyed our experience there.
Also by the river, Lorentes is another highly recommended restaurant and bar. We love the authentic Spanish cuisine and the quirky atmosphere. All the staff are from sunny Spain, so the experience is authentic as it can get!
Darley Abbey Wines is another great place to visit. It’s a wine bar and a distillery, from where they run wine tastings. You can book a table and enjoy food and live music on certain nights of the week too!
The English Wine Project is also a must-visit. There you can purchase award-winning wines and ciders and discover how sparkling wine is made on one of their tours.
